Bartholomew
Acrylic on canvas 36x36in
Abu Dhabi, June 2025
Bartholomew came from a brainstorm about animals and emotions—specifically, the idea of weariness dressed in legacy. I imagined an elephant ringmaster, well-seasoned and unimpressed, a figure who has seen every trick in the book... and taught most of them.
He’s no-nonsense. Doesn’t have time for the theatrics anymore. He’s done playing the game—but he’ll still show up in full regalia, because presentation matters. That’s just who he is.
His attire is vintage-elegant, the kind that once dazzled a crowd. I revisited rich textures in this piece: brocade patterns on faded blue velvet, paired with a golden silk waistcoat that shifts mood depending on the light. It was a joy to explore the nuances of how such fabrics hold form in both spotlight and shadow.
There’s a gravity to Bartholomew’s gaze. Not unkind—just tired of the circus. He knows all the hat tricks. He’s been center ring for longer than he ever intended.
And now? He’s still standing. Still dressed to impress. But you’d better get to the point.
