El Rey
Acrylic on canvas 36x36in
Abu Dhabi, November 2024
El Rey: El Rey means “The King” in Spanish—a name chosen not just for the majesty of the falcon, but for what he represents: vision, sovereignty, and deep respect.
I created this piece as an homage to the Emirati people, whose bond with the falcon runs deep—an animal revered not just for its power and precision, but for its grace, tradition, and legacy.
The falcon in this painting is clothed in regal attire—not to dress him up, but to mirror the quiet nobility he already carries. His posture is composed, his gaze unwavering, as though surveying both past and future.
At the same time, El Rey reflects a personal journey. I titled it in Spanish, the language I’m learning as I plan for a life in Spain—another place of beauty, pride, and history. This painting sits at the intersection of two cultures that have shaped me in different ways.
To me, El Rey is not just a falcon. He’s a guardian of heritage. A symbol of respect. And a reminder that no matter where you are in the world, you carry the echoes of where you’ve been—and the dreams of where you’re going.
