Filbert & Chiselle

Acrylic on canvas 36x24in

Abu Dhabi, March 2024

Filbert & Chiselle (Chimp Collection No. 1) were the first in a series of chimp portraits I began to explore texture, pattern, and storytelling through fabric. What started as a technical exercise quickly turned into something far more intimate.

Their composition reminded me of a couple in their 50s—seasoned, rooted, a little worn but full of pride. I imagined them as quiet farmers, maybe somewhere remote, who’ve spent their lives building something meaningful. They’ve raised children, faced storms, and now sit in contentment.

I loved the challenge of their clothing: layering different patterns, testing how textures interact, and capturing the faded elegance of people who dress with purpose, not trend.

There’s something unspoken between them. A calm. A lifetime. A shared glance that says, We’ve seen things—and we’re still here.

Painting them set the tone for the chimp series: characters full of history, heart, and handcrafted detail.
